What's in the Air
Does Air Have Mass?
Thin Blue Veil

What does a barometer measure?
air pressure
100
Define atmosphere.
Atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds a planet or star.
100
Explain how the syringe experiment proves that air has mass.
When more air pressure was exerted on the blue cube or bubble wrap, they compressed. When less pressure was exerted, they expanded.
100
Name the layers of the atmosphere from lowest to highest.
Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere Ionosphere Exosphere

When is the last day of school?
Tuesday, June 25

What is the unit of measurement for a barometer?
millibars or mb
200
What is the most abundant variable gas?
Water vapor
200
Name the weather factors.
temperature, humidity, pressure, wind
200
This layer absorbs high-energy UV radiation.
stratosphere

What are Mrs. Marx's two daughters names?
Jaime and Taylor
300
Name the 5 weather tools we used in class. HINT: separate the 2-in-1 weather tool we used into two individual tools!
thermometer, barometer, hygrometer, anemometer, compass
300
Name the 4 variable gases in Earth's atmosphere.
water vapor, ozone, carbon dioxide, methane
300
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is a measurement of Earth's gravitational pull on an object.
300
The thinnest layer of the atmosphere.
troposphere
300
When was Mrs. Dewberry's birthday?
February 10
400
Tell and spell the weather tool that measures wind speed.
ANEMOMETER
400
What percentage of the atmosphere is nitrogen and what percentage is oxygen?
Nitrogen: 78% Oxygen: 21%
400
Explain how you know air has mass by using the terms "matter" and "mass."
Matter is the "stuff" that everything is made of. Matter is made of atoms. Atoms have mass (because they have protons, neutron and electrons that weigh AMU's). Air is made of atoms, therefore air has mass.
400
The temperature that the thermosphere can surge to.
1,500 degrees Fahrenheit
400
What town does Mrs. Mortimer live in?
Duxbury
500
What is the average air pressure for Scituate? Hint: It's what we set the gold bar to!
1013 mb
500
Name 6 of the 8 permanent gases in Earth's atmosphere.
nitrogen, oxygen, argon, neon, helium, krypton, hydrogen, xenon
500
Explain why you weigh less on the moon. Include the terms mass and weight in your answer!
You weigh less on the moon because there is less gravity. Since weight is a measurement of gravity, it makes sense that you would weigh less. You mass won't change, no matter where you are because mass is a measurement of matter, not weight.
500
Name the height (in km) above Earth of any layer of the atmosphere.
Troposphere: 9-20 km above Earth Stratosphere: 10-50 km above Earth Mesosphere: 50-80 km above Earth Exosphere: 300-600 km above Earth
