100
What do you use to measure precipitation?
Rain Gauge
100
What is used to measure humidity?
Wet and Dry Bulb.
100
What 2 things can a thermometer contain?
Alcohol or Mercury.
100
What is wind speed and direction?
Wind is moving over the surface of the ground.
100
To which instrument is a barograph recording to?
Android Barometer.
200
What is precipitation?
The amount of rain, snow, drizzle, hail, sleet, that reached the earth's ground from the atmosphere
200
What is humidity?
The amount of water vapour in a given volume of air.
200
What is a minimum-maximum termometer used for
It's used to measure coldest and warmest temperatures of the day.
200
What is wind velocity measured with?
Anemometer.
200
Name another instrument used to measure pressure.
Mercury barometer
300
What affects the intensity and amount of precipitation?
Seasons and locations
300
What does the amount of water vapour that any air can hold depend on?
Temperature.
300
What is temperature a measurement of?
It measures average heat/ thermal energy of the particles in a substance. Degree of warmth in the air.
300
Describe a wind vane.
It has the points of a compass fixed and sited so that they point to the correct direction.
300
Why does hot air rises and cold air sinks?
Because hot air is less dense and cold air is more dense.
400
What causes precipitation?
When a mass of warm air hits the mass of cold air.
400
When we measure the air temperature what does that show us?
The dew point.
400
Is the temperature of boiled water in a 5ml cup the same us in a 10ml cup? explain.
Yes, because temperature does not depend on size.
400
What is a prevailing wind?
the most frequently accuring wind in an area.
400
How does atmosphere exert pressure on the earth's surface?
It achieves it through the particle's weight above the surface forcing down against it.
500
Describe and draw the precipitation cycle.
First water evaporates from a body of water, then it condenses into the water vapour, and later that forms cloud. After a while when it becomes too dense and the water droplets are too big they fall down in the form of rain, snow, drizzle..etc. Then the fallen water reaches the ground and through rivers and streams it reaches back to the ocean.
500
What is the difference between the wet and dry bulb?
Wet bulb measures amount of moisture in the air and dry bulb measures the temperature.
500
In your daily life give 2 examples of when you experience temperature?
microwaved food, when we go outside, eating ice-cream.
500
What are the forms of an anemometer? (at least 3 examples)
ultrasonic anemometer cup anemometer windmill anemometer laser doppler anemometer thermoelectric anemometer
500
Draw and explain how a mercury barometer works.
There's a vacuum at the top of the glass tube and mercury gets filled at the bottom. When air pressure pushes down on it, it either rises or contracts.
