Water freezes at which temperature?
32°F
100
Without the weather channel and other tools, what can you use to forecast the weather?
Cloud appearance
100
Which wind speed makes a hurricane "official"?
74 mph
100
What is the most common type of storm?
Thunderstorm
100
Which tool do we use to measure temperature?
Thermometer
200
Why is the Water Cycle a "cycle"?
Because it has no beginning or end, it continues through the process forever.
200
Why does precipitation occur?
Water droplets grow so big/heavy the air/cloud can no longer hold them, so they fall to the ground (gravity)
200
Name the 3 types of lightning.
Ground to Cloud, Cloud to Cloud, Cloud to Ground
200
Name two conductors of electricity (lightning loves these two things), name one insulator (lightning hates this material).
Conductors: metal and water Insulator: Rubber
200
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
300
What are the 4 parts of the water cycle? *Bonus if you explain each part*
Evaporation - the sun heats water and turns it into an invisible gas (water vapor) in the air Condensation - the water vapor condenses (collects) into a cloud Precipitation - any form of water falling from the clouds to the ground Collection - precipitation runoff and collecting into larger puddles, streams, rivers, and then the ocean
300
What are the 3 most common types of clouds?
Stratus, Cumulus, Cirrus
300
How does hail grow bigger?
It is picked up and circulated back through the cloud it came from, picking up and adding more water droplets each time.
300
In the event of a tornado or hurricane where should you go? *Bonus if you can tell me where to go during a Tsunami, and why they are different*
Hurricane and Tornado - take cover in a low area or basement (if no risk of flooding) or a windowless room like a bathroom in a tub with a mattress or other protective covering. Tsunami - Evacuate! If you can't, then get to higher ground, basements and low areas will probably flood
300
What is a Meteorologist?
A scientist who studies weather
400
What is humidity?
The amount of water vapor in the air.
400
What is fog?
A stratus cloud (the lowest cloud) on the ground
400
What is the area of the US called that is most common for Tornadoes? (States of: Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Nebraska)
Tornado Alley
400
What are "hurricane Shutters" and why do people tape an "X" over their windows?
Hurricane Shutters are strong protective shutters to protect windows of a home. People tape an "X" over their windows when strong winds (hurricanes or tornadoes) are forecast so their windows do not break and glass does not blow around dangerously.
400
What is the climate of Maine? What is the weather today?
Maine's climate is "temperate" not too hot (like the Equator is) and not too cold (like the poles are) Maine is in the middle. Weather (Answers Vary)
500
Give an example of water's 3 states of matter. *Bonus - which can precipitate?*
Ice/Snow flake, rain, water vapor/steam Ice (Hail), snowflakes, and rain can precipitate
500
What are Contrails?
A frozen water vapor "cloud" formed from airplanes

Name 3 differences between tornadoes and hurricanes. *Bonus if you can name 4)
Tornadoes usually start over land, they begin in the clouds and may or may not touch down to the ground. Hurricanes begin over warm ocean and are "fed" by warm water. Tornadoes are usually quick and don't last long, but can come and go several times, or have several different tornadoes at once. Hurricanes can last for several days without stopping, there is usually only one large hurricane and once it is over it doesn't usually start up again. Tornadoes have strong winds in a very small concentrated area, hurricanes have strong winds over a very large area, blowing through everything. You can see a tornado from the outside of it, hurricanes you see as strong wind, while you are in the middle of it.
500
What is the "eye" of a hurricane? *Bonus - what will you notice about the hurricane winds when you are in the eye?*
The eye of the hurricane is the center of the storm where no winds blow, you can often see clear blue sky and stars straight above. Winds were blowing one direction during the first half of the hurricane, after the "eye" passes, the wind blows in the other direction.

What is the major difference between Climate and Weather?
Weather is temporary, it can change daily. Climate is the average weather of a region, it does not change. Climate can change seasonally.
