An avalanche is an example of a fast or slow change?

An avalanche is an example of a fast change.

Wind blowing away sediment to a new place on the mountain is an example of what?

This is Erosion.

100

Layers of sediment forming a hill at the bottom of the ocean floor is an example of

Deposition

100

Flood water pounding against a canyon wall and wearing it down is an example of...?

Weathering

100

Wind blowing away sediment is an example of...?

Erosion

200

How does freezing water cause the weathering of rocks?  The freezing water—

expands cracks and breaks rocks.

200

What causes the greatest erosion effect on our beaches?

Waves crashing on the beach drags the sand and rocks away from the beach.

200

Muddy water being carried away by a fast-moving river is an example of ___?

Erosion

200

Are landslides/mudslides a slow or fast change to the earth?

fast

200

What are 3 agents that WEATHER or break down materials?

Wind, water and ice

300

The process that breaks down rocks and other materials on Earth's surface is called

Weathering

300

What is a landform that is surrounded by water on 3-sides?  Can you name one?

What is a landform that is entirely surrounded by water? Can you name one?

Peninsula. -  Florida, Italy

Island - Hawaii, Fiji

300

How do glaciers weather the Earth's surface?

Glaciers are very slow-moving, huge pieces of solid ice that drag SEDIMENT from one place to another. They wear down one surface and carry SEDIMENT to new places very, very slowly.

300

Is erosion a fast or slow change to the earth's surface?  Give one example not mentioned already.

Slow

300

What is a landform that is surrounded by water on 3-sides?  Can you name one?

What is a landform that is entirely surrounded by water? Can you name one?

Peninsula. -  Florida, Italy

Island - Hawaii, Fiji

What is eposition? _____.

Deposition is when sediment (sand, soil, pebbles, gravel) is deposited or "dropped" in a new location. The root word, "Deposit" is in the word, Deposition. Deposition forms new land features in new places.

400

What are Weathering and Deposition?
How does each change the Earth’s surface?

WEATHERING - To WEAR a landform down into smaller pieces called SEDIMENT.
EROSION - Wind/Water CARRY the SEDIMENT away.
DEPOSITION "drops" or "DEPOSITS" the SEDIMENT in a new location and creates a NEW LANDFORM.
SEDIMENT is created through the process of WEATHERING.
WEATHERING is when water or wind wears down the surface of a landform. EROSION carries away the SEDIMENT and DEPOSITION drops the sediment to a new location.
DEPOSITION is the dropping of sediment by wind, water, ice, or gravity. Wind and water drop the sediment in new locations for new landforms.

How do plants weather rocks?

When roots grow into cracks of rocks and expand the rock breaks.

1.  How do VOLCANOES DESTROY the Earth's Surface?
2.  How do they CONSTRUCT or BUILD UP the Earth's Surface?
Give 2 clear examples.

1.  When VOLCANOES erupt, the lava can explode out of the top with great force destroying the top of the mountain. The LAVA melts and burns everything in its path. The land, trees, plants, animal habitats, and people's homes are burned and destroyed.
2.  The LAVA will harden and make a new landform, such as an island. Also, the soil left behind after a volcano is very rich and good for planting.

400

How can landslides be prevented? Give at least ONE example of something that reduces landslide risk.

Planting trees and plants with very extensive roots to hold soil in place.

Use huge wire netting on steep mountain slopes and hillsides to hold dirt and rocks in place.

Build high and strong barriers and walls that block dirt and rocks at the bottom of landslide-prone

500

A cliff formed near the ocean.  Which statement best describes how this cliff formed?

The ocean waves washed away rock.

500

What is Erosion?

EROSION is the process that picks up and moves WEATHERED rocks. EROSION is the wearing down of landforms by wind, water, ice, and gravity. EROSION then moves sediment from one place to another.

500

 What is WEATHERING?

Weathering is the wearing away or breaking down of rocks into SEDIMENT (tinier pieces of rock or sand/dirt). In WEATHERING, the landform STAYS IN ONE PLACE and is worn down by wind or water. In EROSION CARRIES the SEDIMENT away to a NEW PLACE where it accumulates and becomes a new LANDFORM.

500

What are the processes of moving sediments from location to another?

Erosion and Deposition

Name the starting point of rivers.
What is the ending point of rivers?
What do we usually find at the ending point?

The start of all rivers is called the SOURCE.
The ending point of rivers is called the MOUTH.
We typically find DELTAS at the MOUTHS of rivers.
