A student earns $18.50 for mowing a lawn and $12.75 for walking a neighbor's dog. They spend $9.40 on snacks and $15.85 on a new notebook.

Question: How much money do they have left?

$6.00

A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour for one batch of muffins. Maya makes 2 1/2 batches. She has 2 1/4 cups of flour before starting.

Question: Does Maya have enough flour? If so, how much will she have left? If not, how much more flour does she need?

Yes. Maya has enough flour and will have 3/8 cup left.

What are the TWO integers' rules for multiplication & division?

If you multiply or divide the SAME sign, the answer is POSITIVE!

-2 x -1 = 2

OR

2 / 1 = 2

If you multiply or divide DIFFERENT signs, the answer is NEGATIVE!

-3 x 1 = -3

OR

-10 / 2 = -5

Do these coordinates represent a function:

(X, Y)

(7, 8)

(8, 7)

(7, 3)

(8, 8)

NO, the input (X) of 7 and 8 both have MORE THAN ONE OUTPUT (Y). The input of 7 has an output of 8 and 3. The input of 8 has an output of 7 and 8.

During a hiking trip, Noah starts at an elevation of 150 feet above sea level. He hikes up 275.5 feet, then down 412.75 feet, then up 96.25 feet.

Question: What is Noah's final elevation? Is he above or below where he started, and by how many feet?

Noah ends at 109 feet above sea level, which is 41 feet lower than where he started.

A sporting goods store advertises a 25% discount on a basketball that originally costs $64. After the discount, a 6.25% sales tax is added.

Jordan has $55.

Question: Can Jordan buy the basketball? If so, how much money will remain? If not, how much more money is needed?

Yes. Jordan can buy the basketball and will have $4.00 left.

What is the difference between an inequality, an equation, and a function?

An equation has an equal sign (=) and says that two sides are equal.

An inequality includes symbols like < and > (a line added underneath to show "or equal to") and it compares two amounts that are not necessarily equal.

A function is a rule that matches an input (x) to only ONE output (y).

A school is raising money for a field trip. They already have $148.50. Each student who participates pays $12.75, but the school must spend $3.50 per student on transportation.

The trip will only happen if the school collects at least $350 after paying transportation costs.

Question: Write and solve an inequality to determine the minimum number of students who must participate for the trip to happen.

The minimum number of students is 22 because we need to ROUND UP as we can't have a fraction of a student.

x ≥ 21.78.....

Check:

148.50 + 9.25(22) = 148.50 + 203.50 = 352.00

Since $352 ≥ $350, 22 students is the smallest whole number that satisfies the inequality.
