What is Incivility?

Incivility, also referred to as lateral violence, workplace violence, and bullying, is pervasive in society. As health professionals, it is assumed you will conduct yourself in a polite and professional manner. But how will you respond when your colleagues or patients do not act in the same way?

Fortunately, the skills and attitudes that promote civility are knowledge-based and can be learned. That is why we are talking about incivility, so you can recognize it when you experience it, have the knowledge to reflect on and change your own behavior, and acquire the skill to stand up for a just culture.

Deep breathing exercises help in developing emotional intelligence.

When you find yourself in a heightened emotional state, whether it is stress, anxiety, or maybe it's anger or sadness, breathe and stay focused on your breath. And to do this, all it requires you to do is take a deep inhale for six seconds. Hold for 6 seconds and exhale.
