Arthropods have this type of circulatory system:
Open Circulatory System
How many body segments do insects have, and what are they called?
3: head, thorax, and abdomen
Are fish vertebrates or invertebrates?
Vertebrates
Are birds endothermic or ectothermic?
Endothermic
When this animal hatches from an egg the larvae often look very different from the parents.
Amphibians
All arthropods are classified as vertebrates or invertebrates?
Invertebrates
"True bugs" have how many pairs of wings?
2 pairs of wings (pg 389)
Are fish ectothermic or endothermic?
Ectothermic
What are insulating feathers that are closer to the birds skin?
Down feathers
Name at least 2 of the four orders of reptiles. DOUBLE POINTS: If you can name all 4 orders of reptiles!
Turtles, lizards, snakes, crocodilians, tuatara
What is the process called in which the exoskeleton of an arthropod must adjust for the growth of the organism?
Molting
Metamorphosis
What is the structure which allows fish to be able to breathe?
Gills
What are some of the characteristics of raptors?
Carnivorous, hooked beaks, talons, some of the largest birds, rely mostly on gliding to fly
The name of this organism comes from the Greek words meaning "both kinds of life"
Amphibians
What advantage do compound eyes have for arthropods and insects?
Contain thousands of lenses, gives almost 360 degree field of view
Please give an example of incomplete metamorphosis. What does this mean?
When an insect hatches from an egg to form a nymph, which matures into an adult. (Grasshopper)
What is the function of a fish's swim bladder?
Pg 404, Fills with gases from bloodstream or digestive tract, increases or decreases the gas as the fish swims higher or deeper in the water.
What is a function of the air sacs in birds?
Help make the birds lighter (also like hollow bones), helps maintain internal temperature, part of the respiratory system
What allows a reptile to live in he desert or near the ocean, that an amphibian does not have?
A reptile's scaly skin, vs amphibians have moist permeable skin that makes them unsuited for life in the desert or ocean.
What is the function of antennae in arthropods?
They get sensory information from the antennae.
Please give an example of complete metamorphosis. What does this mean?
Process from which an insect hatches from an egg to larva, pupa, and then an adult. (Butterfly)
What is the difference between cartilaginous fishes vs bony fishes?
pg 401, bony are 95% of fish, ray finned fishes, cartilaginous fishes have skeletons entirely made of cartilage (sharks)
What does the phrase "eat like a bird" mean? Is this true of actual birds? Why or why not?
"Eat like a bird" usually means someone with a poor appetite. Flying and being endothermic require a lot of energy and a high metabolic rate, so birds must actually eat quite a bit. (pg 434)
Reptiles lack a diaphragm to draw air into their lungs, as humans do. How do they get their lungs to expand?
Reptiles contract their rib muscles to allow their lungs to expand.
