What is the difference between direct and indirect characterization?
Direct characterization is when a character is specifically and clearly described by the writer.
Ex: "In the show Stranger Things, Eleven is a powerful, young girl who has unique abilities."
Indirect characterization is when the reader uses close reading and textual analysis to draw inferences about a character's traits and personality based on evidence from the text.
Ex: Despite being exhausted and overheated from two extended overtimes, the goalie laced up her cleats once more to prepare to defend against the penalty kicks knowing that the team's fate was now in her hands.
Even though the writer doesn't come right out and SAY it, as readers, we can infer or GUESS that this goalie is determined, dedicated, and hard-working based on the textual evidence being provided. :)
