When should I start thinking about a future career?

Right now. That way you can begin planning for college, start thinking about internships, and make sure you have the requirements and GPA to go to the college of your choice. You can also use this time to explore your interests that way by the time you do go to college you have an idea of what you want to do. Make sure to align your career interests with the Pathway you are in.

Something to strive towards.

Scientific research shows that setting and working towards goals can contribute to happiness in various ways, including:

  • Being a source of interest, engagement or pleasure
  • Giving us a sense of meaning and purpose
  • Bringing a sense of accomplishment when we achieve what we set out to (or milestones along the way) - this also builds our confidence and belief in what we can do in the future [2][3][4]

What do I do if I fail/don't reach my goal?

Learn from your mistakes and try again.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying.
