Tobacco smoking can lead to lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It increases the risk of heart disease, which can lead to stroke or heart attack. Smoking has also been linked to other cancers, leukemia, cataracts, and pneumonia. All of these risks apply to use of any smoked product, including hookah tobacco. Smokeless tobacco increases the risk of cancer, especially mouth cancers.

Secondhand smoke exposure can lead to lung cancer and heart disease. It can cause health problems in both adults and children, such as coughing, phlegm, reduced lung function, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of ear infections, severe asthma, lung infections, and death from sudden infant death syndrome.

There is no right or wrong answer to this, except you should take professional advice from your psychiatrist.  

One school of thought is to address the addiction.  It can be challenging for psychiatrists to prescribe effective medication that may interact with other drugs or alcohol.  Stopping substance abuse can make it easier to get thought or mood disorders under control. 

Another school of thought it so make the patient feel better so that they stop self-medicating.  

These all have to do with the client's drug of choice, diagnosis, treatment options, etc.  

The correct answer:  ask your doctor and follow medical/psychiatric advice!

There are many answers to this as well:

There are gums, lozenges, nicotine patches.  Your prescriber can prescribe these.  

 There is book called "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr - people are reputed to quit smoking after reading it.  


Providers seem to have different attitudes about vaping - some citing popcorn lung and other dangers as causing it to be just as dangerous as cigarettes.  

You could also call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for resources.
