Debate over whether Missouri should enter the Union as a free or slave state. In return, Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise. Ultimately, Missouri enters as a slave state, Maine partitions from MA to create a new free state. A line at the 36-30 parallel was then designated as the division between any new territories that would enter as either slave or free states. South of the 36-30, the territory would enter as a slave state. North of the 36-30 and the territory would enter as a free state.


Tallmadge Amendment was the initial compromise laid forth that would of allowed for Missouri to enter as a slave state, on the condition that slavery would be phased out in a designated amount of time.
