What is a hypothesis
Making a foreast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.
What is an Inference?
What is Observation?
It is a skill where you use your senses to notice and describe scientific events.
It is a representation of an idea, an object or even a process used to describe or explain something that can't be experienced directly.
What does classifying mean to a scientist?
How can you know whether your hypothesis is correct?
You can test it!
What are inferences based upon?
Past Experience and Prior Knowledge
Qualitative Observations _________what you observe
DESCRIBE
Why do scientists use model (give one example)
- They provide a way of explaining complicated data.
- They help people study and understand things that
can't be directly observed.
- They can be used when experiments are too expensive or dangerous to conduct.
Explain how classification can be compared to a library.
Books are divided into sections: Children and Adults. Each of these sections is divided into divisions like Fiction and Non-Fiction. Then within those sections you can have further divisions such as Mystery, Science Fiction, Fairytales, etc. Then you get down to a single book. Biological classification works the same way by breaking down organisms into groups and sub-groups.
Find the missing words in this Hypothesis
" _____ the plant is put in the window to receive sunlight, _________ if will grow more than the plant in a dark closet."
If - Then
Is this an Inference?
"The boy walked his dog at 7:00AM yesterday morning."
No - it is an observation.
Quantitative Observations use ____________ to
___________ what you observe.
Numbers, Measure
How has a model showing Earth changed?
- First known globe (150BC) was not accurate.
- It was constructed in Greece and only showed a small amount of land in Europe and other countries were left out.
- Over time it improved to what we have today.
Who was the Swedish scientist who is credited with inventing the current system we use to classify living things?
Carolus Linnaeeeus..
How is a hypothesis different from a good guess?
A hypothesis is a statement that predicts an experiments outcome based ON WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW. It also includes a proposed explanation that can be TESTED.
Is the following an inference?
"The butterfly did not eat the ant because it is not a carnivore."
YES
Is the following an Observation?
"I can jump high in basketball shoes because they have rubber on the bottom."
No - it's an Inference
Why might a model not be accurate?
Scientists might not have all the data. Model building can take time to collect all the data.
What are the two major kingdoms in classification?
Plants and Animals
Is this a hypothesis? Why or why not?
"Pistachio ice cream tastes much better than strawberry ice cream."
This is not a hypothesis because this can't be tested or proved because it relies on opinions.
Is the following an inference?
"Water can fall as precipitation, which may include rain, snow, sleet or hail."
NO
Give an observation of the following:
"Tim noticed that after Mr. Smith gave Ann her quiz she said, "I can't believe this!" and a few tears rolled down her face.
- tears rolling down face
- Mr. Smith giving Ann her quiz
Give an example of a model.
- Solar System model.
- DNA model
- Airplane Model
-Computer software simulations
- Model of the atom.
Put the following animals into groups:
Bear, racoon, grasshopper, robin, mouse, sparrow, fox, ant
Forest Animals - bear, racoon, fox
Flying Animals - robin, sparrow
insects - grasshopper, ant
