What is the purpose of a stoichiometry problem?

Stoichiometry calculations help us figure out how much of a chemical we either need or can make in a chemical reaction.

You need to make sure the top (mass) numbers and the bottom (proton) numbers are the same on both sides of the arrow due to the law of conservation of matter.

i.e. you cannot start with more/less than you end with.

Describe how to titrate an acid with a base and what the purpose is.

You add a certain volume of base (of known concentration) to a certain volume of acid that has pH indicator in it. Once the indicator turns a very light pink, you have added enough to get just passed the neutral point. You can then use MaVa=MbVb to determine the molarity (strength) of the acid. You can then use this to determine the exact pH of the acidic solution.

Describe how to perform a dilution and what the purpose is.

A dilution's purpose is to create a dilute/less concentrated/less strong solution from a concentrated/strong solution. You use M1V1=M2V2 to determine how much of the stock solution of known concentration you need to make a dilute solution of known volume and concentration. 

You measure out the volume of the stock with a graduated cylinder, add the liquid to a beaker, and then add in water that gets you to the final desired volume.
