What is the role of a roofmistress?
Roofmistress is a term for an Aiel woman who owns property. Visitors (and even people who live in the home) must get permission from the roofmistress before entering. The idea of a roofmistress extends even beyond individual property, such as Lian who is the roofmistress of Cold Rocks Hold. When someone is a roofmistress for a community, they act as ambassadors for that community and decide who can and cannot take sanctuary in the hold. Community roofmistresses are skilled at negotiating social situations, such as smoothing over Rand's faux pas when he asked leave to enter her own house (not the hold) and also her scathing welcome of Couladin (she shamed him by allowing him entry, but welcoming him as a beggar).
