In the beginning they were happy, together as a family. At the end of the book they all distant themselves from each other and do their own things, try to fit in.

Military like barracks.

Going from freedom and doing whatever they would like to being trapped and controlled.

Lined with wrinkles, had a cane, head was bare.

It was similar to a prison with barbered wire fences, and guard towers, unsanitary.

How before they left for the camp they were alive and happy, and after when they returned just like the leaves they are "dead" and sad.
