What Causes Day and Night on Earth?

Day and night are caused by Earth's rotation.

  • Earth spins on an imaginary line called the axis, which goes through the North and South Poles.

  • It takes about 24 hours for Earth to make one full rotation.

  • As Earth spins, one side faces the Sun, and it becomes daytime on that side.

  • The other side of Earth is in shadow and experiences night.

Key Points:

  • Daytime happens when your part of Earth faces the Sun.

  • Nighttime happens when your part of Earth is turned away from the Sun.

This is why when it's daytime in one part of the world, it's nighttime in the opposite part!

Miles stared at the blank canvas for what felt like hours. Each time he picked up a paintbrush, he froze. “What if it turns out terrible?” he whispered to himself. The memory of his last painting—crumpled and tossed into the trash—lingered in his mind. He took a shaky breath, dipped the brush into blue paint, and made the first stroke. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.

Question:
What is the main theme of the passage?

A) Art should always be perfect.
B) You should listen to other people's opinions.
C) Overcoming fear and self-doubt is the first step to trying again.
D) Blue is the best color to start a painting with.

C) Overcoming fear and self-doubt is the first step to trying again.

Explanation:
Jordan is clearly nervous and afraid of failing again—“What if it turns out terrible?” and remembering his last painting being thrown away shows self-doubt. But even though he’s scared, he still picks up the brush and starts—“It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.” That shows courage and growth.

Bonus (Supporting sentence):

“It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.”

This line shows that Jordan is pushing past his fear and giving it a try, which supports the theme.
