- Resident Assistants may not enter Phase II, Block II, or Block III during their time as a Resident Assistant.

- Resident Assistants must receive prior approval from professional staff for the following, total outside commitments cannot exceed 15 hours/week:

i. outside employment or involvement within University and/or community organizations

ii. enrollment in more than 18 credit hours.

iii. enrollment in more than two hours of practicum, internship, or clinical.

One procedure for alcohol policy violation

What is: 

- Incidents where prohibited use of alcohol is suspected will be documented in writing and may be processed through the conduct system. 

- Whenever feasible, alcohol will be drained and containers will be disposed of safely by the resident(s) or guest(s) in the presence of a Residential Life staff member. All alcohol involved in an alcohol policy violation will be disposed according to policy, even if the alcohol content/ volume is aligned with policy. 

- If a staff member's safety is in jeopardy or the situation becomes unreasonably negative, it is advisable to seek assistance from professional staff and/or ESU Police and Safety. 

- Incidents involving public intoxication, whether or not alcohol is present, will also be documented in writing. Staff will vary depending on the behavior patter and the resource possibilities at the given time.

What is: 

  • It’s a method of talking to people when they have broken policy or floor expectations.
  • There are five general guidelines to follow and three levels of behavior to address. 
  • It’s designed to eliminate small situations turning into power struggles or bigger issues.

Two alcohol or drug policies as outlined in the RA terms and conditions of employment 

What is: 

- Resident Assistants will abide by all state, federal, Residential Life and University regulations regarding drugs and alcohol. The following only serve as guidelines and are not a comprehensive list:

i. Any RA under 21 years of age old who consumes alcohol will be subject to employment action.

ii. Any RA who provides alcohol to students under age 21 will be subject to employment action.

iii. Any RA who plays any role in concealing or otherwise facilitating alcohol consumption by students who are under age 21 will be subject to employment action.

iv. RAs, even if they are of legal age (21), may not be under the influence of alcohol when they are working in any RA capacity, including a desk shift, on-duty, in for the night within their community, responding to incidents, interacting with residents, or in any other way acting within their RA position within their community.

v. The RAs may not, at any time, engage in, enter, or remain in any area or premises where illegal drug and/or alcohol use is occurring.

vi. Public intoxication of any RA, of any age, is prohibited while in Residential Life facilities.

vii. Illegal possession or consumption of alcohol and/or drugs on or off campus is prohibited.

- Any RA who violates the Student Code of Conduct, Residential Life policies, or any state or federal laws may be subject to dismissal.

- Resident Assistants are not permitted to attend social functions on or off campus involving illegal drugs or where there is underage drinking.

- Performing any job responsibilities or duties under the influence of drugs or alcohol is prohibited.

After notification by ESU Police & Safety of a missing person one action that must be taken

What is: 

- If contact cannot be made with a resident within 24 hours after the resident is reported to be missing for at least 24 hours, Residential life staff will notify ESU Police & Safety. This will lead to the completion of an official mission person report. 

- The resident's Missing Person Contact will be contacted within this time frame. 

- Any resident under the age of 18, who is not an emancipated individual, will provide contact information for a custodial parent or legal guardian. This custodial parent or legal guardian will be contacted within 24 hours of the determination that the resident is reported to be missing for 24 hours.

Level 1: The resident is compliant and changes the undesired behavior.

Level 2: Resident disagrees, argues or ignores your attempt to talk to him/her.  The behavior ultimately changes after reflection.

Two policies regarding confidentiality and media relations as outlined in the RA terms and conditions of employment document

What is: 

- Residential Life staff have and will have access to confidential information regarding interpersonal relationships, mental health, personal history, policy infractions and data. Disclosure of information is governed by university policy, state, and federal law.

- Information about residents not expressly defined as public information by Emporia State University will not be shared with any party outside of necessary Residential Life staff, Division of Student Affairs, or Police and Safety unless authorized by a Residential Life professional staff member.

- Breaches of confidentiality are taken seriously and may result in immediate employment action.

- Resident Assistants are not authorized to speak on behalf of the University or the Department of Residential Life in any official capacity without prior permission from the Director of Residential Life. It is expected that Resident Assistants do not use their position title when expressing views on any aspect of Emporia State University to the media or in any written or on-line mediums. This includes The Bulletin.

What is: 

  • Support Statement: A statement that conveys a nurturing, sincere message to the resident.  Will highlight strengths of the person or offer support.
  • Benefit: Determine a benefit that could occur if the person follows the expectation.   
  • Expectation: Share the expectation or policy you wish the person to follow.  Expectations must have been established prior.
  • Expectation Breakdown: State the behavior that violated the expectation or policy.  Be specific. 
  • Closure: Provide closure to the conversation that creates the feeling that things are okay/can be solved/will get better.
