  1. Install a smoke detector (Sound the Alarm); Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years and tested every month

  2. Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher in your house

  3. Make sure matches and lighters are out of reach from younger family members

  4. Keep flammable materials away from heat devices

  5. Keep appliances unplugged when not in use

What are two things you should do in the face of a fire?


  1. Yell “fire” several times and go outside, leave your things where they are, and GET OUT IMMEDIATELY

  2. If you must escape through smoke, get low

  3. If fire and smoke are blocking your exit, put a wet towel underneath the door, and wave a flashlight or something eye-catching at the window to sign for help

  4. If your clothes catch on fire, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll around until the flames go out. 

  5. Cool burned skin with cool (not cold) water for 3-5 minutes. SEEK medical attention

  6. Smoke Alarm should be replaced every 10 years

  • Let family and friends know you are safe by meeting with them at the designated spot you have planned with your family

  • People and animals that are injured should be transported to medical help immediately

  • Stay out of the area until professionals say it is safe to re-enter

  • Find an area of shelter ( neighbor’s house, family member’s house, community shelters)
