The first WIC clinic officially opened in Pineville, Kentucky on January 15, 1974. By the end of that year, WIC was operating in 45 states.
WIC operates domestically in the U.S., but through the WIC Overseas Program, it also serves eligible military families abroad. As of recently, the program is available in approximately 12 countries, including Germany, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Japan, Korea, Turkey, Portugal, various Central American locations, and Iceland.
