I hurry to my locker, grab my backpack, and rush out to the bus. My parents are working later than usual, and I can't wait to have the house to myself for a whole hour. I hop off the bus and run up the steps to my front door. I rummage through my backpack. Oh, no! How am I going to get into the house?

I push the button, and the machine starts to fill with water. I measure out some liquid and pour it in, then start to sort the clothes into piles. I load the first pile into the machine.

We step into a tiny box-like room. A few people are already standing inside, but we manage to squeeze in. Someone asks, "what floor?" "Two, please," I say. She pushes the button, and the doors close.

I get up extra early so I don't have to rush to get to the bus stop. The house is quiet, and I wonder why no one else is up. I slip into the bathroom, brush my teeth, and take a shower. I pack my backpack with my lunch and books, and grab a bagel to take with me for breakfast. I open the door and see nothing but white. There are no cars on the road. My mom comes into the kitchen and tells me to go back to bed.

I walk into the darkened room, but my eyes quickly adjust, with the help of some tiny lights that line the floor. I walk down the aisle and find a seat. Then I wait for things to begin.

I put an old sheet over my head, and find the holes I've cut out for my eyes. I grab the largest bag I can find. The fall air is cool and crisp as I step out into the darkness. There are lots of people outside, and they also carry bags and buckets.

I burst through the door, and the lady at the desk gives me a look that says, "shhhh!" Several people are sitting quietly with books open in front of them. A few people are sitting at computers. Some are browsing through the shelves.

Today is the big day. My little sister is eager to get outside. She puts on her helmet, and gets into position. I tell her to put her feet on the pedals and push. I hold onto the back until she gets her balance, then I let go. She's doing it!
