HOCKEY
Fun Fact:
Hockey has been played for over 4,000 years, with the earliest recorded form of the game played in ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptians played a game that is similar to our present-day hockey. Drawings on tombs at Beni Hassan in Menia Governorate show players holding bats made of long palm-tree branches, with a bent end similar to that of the hockey bat.

C) Year
A year!
240 resorts in 13 countries. We asked Arnie about the best and worst things about their World Record achievement:
“The best thing I guess was realising that Lucy and I had actually achieved what we’d set out to do – it seemed so surreal! We finished up on December 31 and we were crowned the “King and Queen” of skiing.
The worst thing was the night of July 22 after our borrowed Lada truck had broken down in Bariloche. It took four successive breakdown trucks to get us back over the Andes from Argentina back to its home in Temuco, Chile to get it repaired and then when we got there we realised we hadn’t skied that day yet, so we tried to hire a taxi to get us to the nearest snow – a volcano called Llaima. But the roads were flooded and not a single taxi would take us there. In the end we managed to hire a truck and skied Llaima for just an hour to keep the record going.”

Curling!
Where is curling from? How did the sport begin?
Tara Peterson: Curling was invented in Scotland in the 16th century out on the frozen ponds. It was basically something to do on the pond in the wintertime. They’d take whatever kinds of stones they could find and literally just throw them down the ice sheets. I don't even know what they were using for brooms—whatever they were sweeping their decks with, I guess. Then slowly over time, they made the “house” and they started making better rocks that were all the same standard size.
TRUE OR FALSE:
All the events at the Winter Olympics take place in snow and ice!
TRUE!
These frosty competitions include ice skating, skiing, snowboarding and more. Some intrepid athletes venture high into the mountains on amazing cross-country ski races, while others compete indoors at specially-built venues.
SIKGNI
SKIING
Where does the word skiing come from?
Skiing - Wikipedia
The word "ski" comes from the Old Norse word "skíð" which means to "split piece of wood or firewood". Asymmetrical skis were used in northern Finland and Sweden until at least the late 19th century.
KSATGNI
SKATING
The first skating moves were made on animal bones
Archaeologists have found that skating on frozen lakes and rivers was used to improve transportation in Finland thousands of years ago (to avoid walking all around a lake for example). At the time, there were strapping animal bones to be able to glide. They made holes at each end of the bones and used twine to go through them and attach to their feet. Archaeologists think they were using wooden poles to help with propulsion.
The metal blades appeared only during the 13th century.
In 2008, the worlds largest snowman was named:
A) Olympia
B) Buddy
C) Snowflake
Olympia. By the time volunteers finished, Olympia was 122 feet, 1 inch tall (37.21 meters) with a 125-foot diameter at the base.
And she had trees for arms, a mouth made of tyres and skis as eyelashes – genius.
“We actually built the world’s largest snowman (Angus, King of the Mountain) in 1999, and then beat our own record by building the world’s largest snowwoman (Olympia Snowwoman) in 2008.
It took a lot of hands on deck to make these projects happen, but people really banded together, from the school children who made the giant “carrot” nose to the construction company that donated use of their crane!
The funniest thing is that tourists still occasionally ask us and other places around town where we keep our snowman/snowwoman – like they are in a giant freezer somewhere! The look on people’s faces is priceless when they realize that the snowpeople have melted.”

C) 2 Inches
3 micrometers! carved with a scanning electron microscope
Western University's small snowman took the world record from the National Physical Laboratory in London, the previous record holder for their snowman who came in at about 0.01 millimeters, or 10 micrometers. The new record is less than half the size, which is pretty remarkable given the scale on which these labs are working.

Longest time juggling three snow balls with bare hands:
A) 5 minutes and 30 seconds
B) 11 minutes and 45 seconds
C) 45 minutes
Juggler extraordinaire Nate managed to juggle for a whacking great 11 minutes and 45 seconds.
“My hands are very sensitive to cold, so this was a tough record for me to set. The fact that my hands went numb after about a minute was both a blessing and a curse. On the bright side, I didn’t have to worry about the painful cold anymore. On the negative side, it’s difficult to maintain control of the juggle when you can’t feel your hands.”

SNOW SHOEING
Snowshoeing has a long and rich traditionSnowshoes have been around for perhaps as many as 4,000 to 6,000 years, and were probably first used in central Asia. Essential for mobility over deep snow, snowshoes would have been common gear for trappers, traders, and anyone who lived in the far north.
