FACT: The Wisconsin state bird is the Robin.

T or F:  The American Robin goes south for winter and comes back in spring.

Trick question.  It is true AND false.  The Latin name for the American Robin is Turdus migratorius, so it is migratory in nature.  Generations of Wisconsinites keep their eyes open for a robin in March or April as it is felt like the first sign of spring.   However, especially in Southern Wisconsin, some robins do not migrate and are present in the badger state all year. "It is a common misconception that all robins migrate"Volkert said  "All they need is some open water, say from a spring, and they can find berries and other food even when the snow covers the ground.

Kringle!  This distinctive oval-shaped treat has been a Racine County tradition since Danish immigrants brought it to Wisconsin in the mid-19th century.  An authentic Danish Kringle is 32 layers of flaky, buttery dough filled with a variety of fruits and nuts and baked until golden brown. Popular varieties include pecan, almond, raspberry, cherry, apple, strawberry, and cream cheese. Racine bakers get creative with seasonal selections like turtle, cranberry, pumpkin, cinnamon, and key lime.

The honeybee is recognized as a symbol in seventeen states, primarily because honeybees play such an important role in agriculture. Bee pollination is critical to plant and human survival - beeswax and honey are just surplus gifts from this tiny wonder of nature. The plant world expends a lot of energy attracting bees and other insects with brilliantly colored flowers and sweet nectar (nectar is produced solely to attract pollinating insects).

Harry Houdini (Appleton, WI)

Strange fact- Houdini claimed to have been born on April 6, 1874 in Appleton, Wisconsin, he actually was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary. Recently discovered ship's logs indicate that the Weiss family moved to Appleton when Houdini was a toddler. The family came to America because of a job opportunity for Houdini's father, Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss, who became Appleton's first rabbi. While Houdini wasn't born in Appleton, he fondly referred to it as his hometown.

Morels (Morchella esculenta) tend to grow around or under a slew of different trees, from ash to elm to sycamore and even fruit trees, though I’ve had my best luck with ash. Morels are great spring foraging, but they echo the season’s own capricious spirit.

The temperature has to be just right, low 60s to 70s, with a ground temperature in the 50s. A light drizzly misting sort of precipitation the night before or early that morning helps, too.

FACT:  Green Bay Wisconsin is famous for Booyah.

T or F: Booyah is a cod sandwich with pickles

“Booyah (also spelled booya) is a thick stew, believed to have originated in Belgium, and made throughout the Upper Midwestern United States. Booyah can require up to two days and multiple cooks to prepare; it is cooked in specially designed “booyah kettles” and usually meant to serve hundreds or even thousands of people. The name can also refer to a social event surrounding the meal.”

This is not a quick and easy recipe. It’s healthy. It’s delicious, but booyah is definitely a labor of love.  Although there are likely hundreds of variations of Green Bay Booyah recipes in existence, the main ingredient is always the same: roasted chicken. Oxtail and beef are also added, along with the bones for a rich flavor and silky mouthfeel.   Vegetables like peas, carrots, cabbage, rutabaga, potatoes, celery, and onions are also a big component. And it all adds up to the most comforting comfort food you’ll ever have.

This culinary tradition is prevalent in areas of Wisconsin along the coastal Upper Great Lakes, with large Scandinavian populations.  Is it
lefse

fish boil

Many credit Scandinavian immigrants for bringing the fish boil to Door County. Fish boils were originally used to feed large crowds of lumberjacks and fishermen. It was a quick economic way to feed large groups of people. It later became an attraction at restaurants.  The fish is cut into small chunks and cooked in boiling water with red potatoes. Some boilers add onions as well. Salt is the only seasoning used. It raises the specific gravity of the water. Up to one pound of salt per two gallons of water is used. The fish and potatoes are prepared in a cast-iron kettle. When the water comes to a boil, the potatoes, kept in a wire basket, are lowered in.

The fish are then placed in another wire basket and lowered in. After 9–10 minutes, when the fish are cooked, the oils rise to the top of the pot. The boiler then tosses a small amount of kerosene on the fire and the increase in flames causes a boilover. The fish oils spill over the side of the pot and the fish is done. The fish chunks remain whole and firm. Chefs usually drip melted butter over the fish before serving. Fish boils do not always involve a flare-up with kerosene or fuel oil. This practice originated in Door County to entertain tourists

What song do they play between the third and fourth quarter at a Badger football game?
Sweet Caroline
Roll Out the Barrel
Jump Around

Jump Around was first played in 1998 against Purdue.  Badgers were playing against Drew Brees (quarterback for Saints).  It was marketing intern (also an inured tight end for the Badgers) job to come up with new songs that would get fan and team excited.  Everyone went nuts and they made it a tradition after the first day of it being played.  So many people were jumping they asked them to not do it again (they were worried that the stadium would damage).  They brought it back because the students were so upset.
