The Virgin is viewed as preservation of the Indian identity and the linkage between Native peoples and the land so its a positive symbol and Malinche is viewed as a negative symbol for betraying her people and willingly to stay by the side of the enemy of her people.

What did Baptism mean back in the day to the natives an what does it mean to people today?
Baptism was more about security and financial help because as the child was sponsored by a couple which meant that the couple had responsibility over the child as if it where their own. Having godparents now doesn't have as much meaning of financial security because usually people get baptized at an early age, and usually they only get to see their godparents on rare occasions.
