What is Sojourner Truth?

 Her birth name was Isabella "Belle" Baumfree. She was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. When the Civil War started, she  urged young men to join the Union cause and organized supplies for black troops. After the war, she became involved with the Freedmen’s Bureau, helping freed slaves find jobs and build new lives. She gave herself the name Sojourner Truth in 1843 after she became convinced that God had called her to leave the city and go into the countryside "testifying the hope that was in her".

Sally Ride was an American astronaut and physicist. She was born in Los Angeles, she joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman in space in 1983. Ride was the third woman in space overall, after USSR cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova (1963) and Svetlana Savitskaya (1982).  Ride remains the youngest American astronaut to have traveled to space, having done so at the age of 32. After flying twice on the Orbiter Challenger, she left NASA in 1987.

Malala Yousafzai is the youngest women to win a noble peace prize. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in northwest Pakistan, where the local Pakistani Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school. What happened to her at the age of 15 years that had the world watching?

On 9 October 2012, a (Pakistani) Taliban gunman shot Yousafzai as she rode home on a bus after taking an exam in Pakistan's Swat Valley. Yousafzai was shot with one bullet, which travelled 18 inches (46 cm) from the side of her left eye, through her neck and landed in her shoulder. After the shooting, Yousafzai was airlifted to a military hospital in Peshawar, where doctors were able to remove the bullet but unfortunately had to also remove part of her skull due to swelling

They moved her to a safer location. She had a 70% chance of survival. Offers to treat Yousafzai came from around the world. On 15 October, Yousafzai travelled to the United Kingdom for further treatment. 

As of today she has had reconstructive surgery, a cochlear implant to restore her hearing, and has recovered up to 96% of her facial nerve. 

She received the Nobel peace prize on October 10 2014 at age 17.
