Read the famous Mark Twain quote:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do."

Explain why Twain used "disappointed" in this quote rather than a word a similar denotative meaning, like frustrated or depressed. Be sure to examine "connotation" in your answer.

Answers will vary; some people may have the connotation of an elder scolding them or saying they are disappointed in their behavior. This will be similar in the future where the person is scolding their younger self. Disappointed gives a notion of both upset and angry with oneself while also showing regret whereas depressed more depicts sadness and frustration depicts anger.

Read the quote from an employee evaluation:

"His performance in editing was subpar."

The meaning of the underlined word is ironic--there's something about it that seems opposite of what it should be (think sarcasm.) Use your schema about the meaning of "sub" as well as your scheme about the game of golf to determine the meaning of this word.

+100 points if you can also explain why its meaning is ironic.

subpar means something is not "Good" or "Up to standard" this because sub means "Below" and "Par" in golf is the standard of what you should hit on the hole.

Its meaning is ironic because if you are under par in golf, that is a good thing!
