They were the first to use the potter's wheel to make better pottery, irrigation to get water to their crops, bronze metal to make strong tools and weapons and looms to weave cloth from wool.  The ingenuity of the Mesopotamians led to new technologies previously unknown that improved their society tremendously.

The ancient Egyptians developed many technologies that benefited their society.  The Egyptians developed a calendar to plan for planting crops, created a system of numbers to help build structures and collect taxes, and developed medical practices to heal broken bones and treat wounds.  The advancements in many fields led to new technologies that enriched life in ancient Egypt.

Environmental factors contributed significantly to the to the decline of the Indus Valley culture. Satellite images reveal shifts in tectonic plates caused earthquakes and floods that altered the course of the Indus River. Water sources for people and crops in the Indus Valley dried up. The satellite images provide clear evidence that environmental changes led to the end of the Indus Valley.

Buddha practiced asceticism due to the belief that denying ones self of any pleasures was the path to enlightenment.  Buddha originally started practicing asceticism because it promoted not indulging yourself (and practically making yourself starve to death). However, overtime, he learned people needed a balance of pleasure and self restriction to achieve enlightenment.  The practice of Asceticism to obtain enlightenment ultimately led Buddha to realize this practice lacked a true life balance.

Hammurabi's Code required accusers to bring the person they have accused of a crime into court to determine they're innocence. Many of the laws required the accused to jump in the Euphrates River to prove their innocence. If the accused washed up to shore safely, they were deemed innocent. But if they drowned, then they were guilty. While the Hammurabi Code included a system to determine guilty or innocence, some of the methods were unreasonable and dangerous.
