Happened from 1914 - 1918. Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism were major contributors to war, but the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand was main spark. New technologies (machine guns, tanks, airplanes) and trench warfare were key characteristics of this war.
