The Yalta Conference recognized Soviet control of Eastern Europe.  In fact, at the time of the conference, Russian troops already controlled large portions of that region.  Unless the US and Great Britain wanted war with Russia, Stalin intended to maintain Russian control over the area.  Roosevelt and Churchill were eager to gain Soviet aid in war against Japan; therefore, they consciously tried not to antagonize Stalin.  Stalin promised Churchill and Roosevelt that he would allow free elections in Eastern Europe following the war.  Russia was given control of North Korea following the defeat of Japan and quickly turned North Korea into a communist state.

Chamberlain sought to halt Hitler's expansionistic plans through a policy of appeasement.  He thought that HItler would be content with the Sudetenland.  Churchill, on the other hand, was opposed to appeasement because he believed that it would only increase Hitler's desire for more land. After Chamberlain returned from the Munich Conference, Churchill declared it a "total and unmitigated defeat.  History showed the Churchill was right.  He wanted to stand up to Hitler.  During World War 2, Churchill was a source of strength for the British people.
