DAILY DOUBLE!!!

What do we mean by "anger is a secondary emotion"

Anger is not a primary emotion which means usually there is something beneath the surface such as depression or sadness. We often feel safer/more in control/more acceptable to express anger versus sadness or depression. Often we aren't even aware of those other emotions lingering below the anger.

Give me a example of how someone might respond using all 3 types of communication styles...

Your mom suddenly cares about curfew when she has never before. Suddenly you are grounded for two weeks (no phone, no outside time, no friends). You are very angry and feel this is unfair

Aggressive Example:

"I f-ing hate you. You are a horrible mother"

Assertive Example:

"I didn't realize curfew was this important to you and I feel really frustrated being held to this rule when I didn't know it was one."

Passive example:

"I'm grounded? Fine"

Walk me through the CBT Diamond for this scenario....

Situation: My SO broke up with me without warning. I thought the relationship was going good.

Thoughts: What did I do? Am I a horrible SO? I'll never be happy again. I can't live without them

Feelings: Depression, Sadness, Distraught (intensity 9/10)

Behaviors: Blow up their phone, cry/isolate, self-harm

(Turn it from the negative to the positive)

Situation stays the same.

Ex Thoughts: Wow I didn't see this coming. Hopefully we can talk and I can get some clarity. I'm really sad about this, I wasn't expecting it. Maybe it's for the best

Ex Feelings: Sadness, Depression, Distraught (maybe like a 6), hopefulness (like a 2)

Behaviors: Go be with a friend to talk it out. Do some self-care, cry and express your emotions. Talk to your Ex-SO in a few days if they are willing

What are some examples/traits of authoritarian parenting styles

Child has no say, parent is the absolute authority

Child's feelings/opinions don't matter

Rules are overly strict and don't always make sense

Lots of tension

Consequences can happen without warning

When I say jump, you say how high

DAILY DOUBLE!

Marijuana impacts what kind of neurotransmitter in the brain?

How does it effect that neurotransmitter?

Dopamine (the feel good one)

Marijuana increases your dopamine levels (why we get that high feeling) and consistent use keeps that higher level so when we stop using, it drops way lower than it's originally starting point. It's why nothing seems fun or interesting in those first few weeks of sobriety. Your brain is literally struggling to produce dopamine.
