What is a metaphor?
An extreme exaggeration or overstatement that a writer uses for emphasis.

A statement that gives the main idea of an essay.

Words, phrases, or clauses that describe another word.
What are modifiers?
The structure of language. The rules and guidelines that you follow in order to speak and write acceptably.
What is grammar?
A comparison of similar objects to help clarify one of the objects.
What is an analogy?
A little story used to illustrate or make a point.
What is an anecdote?
The technical language of a certain group, occupation, or field.
What is jargon?
Writing that is meant to convince readers about an opinion or prove a specific position.
What is persuasive?
Written conversation between two or more people.
A figure of speech in which a nonhuman thing (an idea, object, or animal) is given human characteristics.
What is personification?
Using sarcasm, irony, or humor to make fun of people's habits or ideas. This is often uses to raise questions about a current event or political decision.
What is satire?
The science of reasoning. This uses reasons, facts, and examples to prove or support a point.
What is logic?
Taking someone else's words or ideas and using them as your own.
What is plagiarism?
Placing greater stress on the most important idea in a piece of writing; can be achieved by placing the important idea in a special position, by repeating a key word or phrase, or by simply writing more about this idea than the others.
What is emphasis?
A technique that uses a word or phrase to mean the opposite of its normal meaning.
What is irony?
A statement that is contrary to common sense yet may, in fact, be true.
What is a paradox?
A writer's unique, personal style.
What is voice?
A phrase or an expression that means something different from what the words actually say.
What is an idiom?
A word or phrase that connects or ties two ideas together smoothly.
What is a transition?
A technique in which two words with opposite meanings are put together for a special effect.
What is an oxymoron?
Repeating similar grammatical structures (words, phrases, or sentences) to give writing rhythm.
What is parallelism?
Placing two ideas (words or pictures) side by side so that their closeness create a new often ironic meaning.
What is juxtaposition?
The order and relationship of words in a sentence.
What is syntax?
The writer's attitude toward the subject; this can be serious, sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek, solemn, objective, and so on.
