Why did Britain declare war on Germany in 1914?

When Britain initiated their plan to invade France and knock the French out of the war before fighting the Russian on the eastern front they also invade neutral Belgium. Invading neutral countries would set a dangerous precedent and so Britain declared war on Germany and her allies to come to Belgium's defence.

What is conscription and why was it so controversial? 

Forced service in a countries armed services

Many Canadians such as the examples listed below didn't believe it was their fight, didn't believe in violence, or thought they could help the war effort in other ways

- French Canadians did not have loyalty to the British Empire or France and felt that it was not their war to fight

- The farmers believed that conscription would aggravate the problem caused by the pressure recruiting officers were putting on rural areas by depriving the countryside of the strong men needed for farm labour.

- Pacifists/Conscientious Objectors refused to engage in military service or go to war because doing so would conflict with deeply held personal beliefs.
