A reparation is compensation for war damage, paid for by a defeated state. Germany had to pay reparations after WW1.

Stipulation 1. First of all, Germany had to agree to a war-guilt clause and claim full responsibility for starting the war (all shame would be on them).

Stipulation 2. Germany lost all of their colonies. These colonies were given to Great Britain and France. Germany could not seek any more lands in Europe or elsewhere.

Stipulation 3. Germany had to give up parts of their country that were added to the countries of Poland and Czechoslovakia. The area on the German/French border called Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France.

Stipulation 4. Germany had to pay for the war known as “reparations.” Large sums of money were owed to the allies, so much money that an already broke Germany could never pay. The rich coal mines of the Saar (in Germany) would be owned by the French for 15 years.

Stipulation 5. Germany’s army was reduced to 100,000 men; the army was not allowed tanks. Germany was not allowed an air force and was only allowed 6 capital naval ships and no submarines. France was allowed to occupy a piece of Germany (known as the Rhineland) and the German military was not allowed in that area.
