back in the day when it was common to be a survent in a large household, abbey, or castle, the servents did not get Christmas off inorder to repair and manage the wealthy families celebration. the servents although did get the day after Christmas off and the family would often send the servents to there own families with a box full of leftovers and gifts, hence the name boxing day.
