Hyperbole: "His mind filled with the wisdom of the papalagi"- Exaggeration of how education has completely changed the son’s thinking.

Alliteration: “speaks and you don’t want to hear him / he dresses and you don’t want to see him”-Repetition of “he” and “don’t” sounds adds rhythm and emotional tension.

Metaphor: "the wisdom the papalagi"-Compares Western education to wisdom, suggesting it changed the son’s values.

Personification: "I wonder where/in the darkness/you lost each other"- Darkness is used to represent emotional distance and confusion

Dear grandma (SHAMPOO):

Hyperbole: "Varied news to cheer / you no longer hear”- Suggests total detachment — exaggerates the distance caused by aging.

Alliteration: “silently, praying promptly”- Repetition of the p sound.

Metaphor: “From your sweat and pain / they've learned”- Sweat and pain represent hard work and sacrifice.

Personification: “Each night that darkens / echoes your calls”- Night is described as echoing calls, giving it human qualities.
