Explain the Mabo decision and its significance 

In 1992 Eddie Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander believed the Australian land ownership laws were wrong. After Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had occupied Australia for 40, 000 to 60, 000 years, British settlers declared the Australia 'terra nullius' (empty land) and laid claims to the land. In June 1992, the High Court ruled that 'terra nullius' should not have been applied to Australia and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had rights to the land.
