Why did the Franco-Siamese crisis happen?

  • Expansionist Ambitions: France sought to expand its holdings in Indochina and coveted the territories east of the Mekong River, which were then controlled by Siam.
  • The "Left Bank" Claim: French officials claimed that the Lao states were historically vassals of Vietnam (a French protectorate) and therefore rightfully belonged to France.
  • Aggressive Diplomacy (Gunboat Diplomacy): Auguste Pavie, a French diplomat, actively worked to bring Laos under French rule, taking advantage of Siamese weakness in the region.
  • Border Incidents: The crisis was fueled by specific incidents, including the expulsion of French merchants and the death of French inspector Gaston Grosgurin, which were used as pretexts for military intervention.
  • The Paknam Incident: French gunboats forced their way up the Chao Phraya River to Bangkok, resulting in a naval clash and forcing King Chulalongkorn to accept harsh terms, ultimately leading to the cession of Laos to France.
