Sitting on the top of the social system was the emperor. His position was generally inherited (passed down from his father). He was the head of all Japan. He was in charge of the army and all the resources that were available in Japan. According to mythology (myths and stories) the emperor’s families were direct
descendants from their Gods. Under the shoguns, the emperor did not have the most power. He was just like a figure head of the country.
