100
Name two things you should/should not do in a lab to remain safe
listen to teacher walk tie up hair wear saftey goggles etc etc
100
define the term carnivore
an organism that only eats meat
100
What is the name given to when a substances changes from a liquid to a gas
evaporation
100
name the layer of the earth under the crust
mantle
100
how many cells are present in the average person
100 trillion
200
Name the energy type: a moving object will have AND an object sitting on top of a hill (not moving) will have
Kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy
200
What do all the letters in MRS C GREN stand for
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, cells, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition
200
Helium has an atomic number of 2. How many electrons does it have?
2 electrons
200
what is a lahar?
a large amount of water rushing down a volcanoe which picks up debri as it moves.
200
Draw what the letter "b" would look like if it was viewed under a microscope.
q
300
What lab equipment do you use to recover solid salt crystals out of salty water
Only piece of equpiment needed is the evaporating dish (to speed up the process, heat evaporating dish over a bunsen burner on a tripod and gause mat)
300
explain the difference between a physiological adaptation and a structural adaptation
Structrual adaptations are physical adaptations eg bones, teeth, ear shape Physiological adaptations are adaptations where substances are made inside the body eg stomach juice, hair colour
300
Explain if Sodium chloride (NaCl) is an element or not
No. It is made up of more than one type of atom Na and Cl
300
explain how sedimentary rock is formed
small particles of rock and debri settle on the ocean floor. Over time more particles build up on top which puts pressure on the layers below. This pressure compacts the sediments together forming sedimentary rock
300
draw an energy equation for a person going for a run
chemical energy ----> sound energy + kinetic energy energy+ Heat energy
400
Explain how to safely light a bunsen burner
Answer must include: - collar must be closed to you can see flame and -light match before you turn on the gas so that the room does not fill up with gas.
400
Using the organisms listed below construct a foodchain: Tui, Possum, Flax bush
Flax bush --> Tui --> Possum
400
explain the difference between a physical change and a chemical change
chemical change: new substance formed. atoms rearrange themselves. you observe things light light heat and smells. Hard or impossible to reverse. Physical change: no new substance, change in state, easily reversed
400
explain how water freezing in cracks in rocks can over time erode a rock away
The water freezes and expands which makes the cracks get even bigger. Over time this constant freezing and expanding of water eventaully can erode/break the rock into little pieces
400
list 4 rules you must follow when drawing a graph
must be neat needs a title label axis needs units on axis must go up evenly eg 2, 4, 6, 8 not 1, 6, 7, 11, 14
500
You have a measuring cylinder, water and a small pebble. Explain how you could determine the volume of the pebble with the equpiment listed.
Fill the measuring cylinder with water. Record volume (how many ml of water there is) Place pebble in water filled measuing cylinder. record new volume. Take second reading away from first and this will give you the volume of the pebble
500
Explain how plant cells are different to animal cells and why these differenes are important
plant cells have a cell wall as this provides the cell with support. Animal cells do not have a cell wall becuase animals have skeltons which support their body Plant cells have chloroplasts as they make food from the sun. Animals ingest their food so have no chloroplasts.
500
Explain how you could separate out a beaker filled with water, iron fillings, sugar, and sand so that each substance (other than the water) was in its own container.
use a magnet to separate the iron out. Filter the sandy/salty water through filter paper to remove all the sand. Boil the water away and this will leave you with the sugar
500
Explain what is causing the plates to move
convection currents in the mantle. Hot magma close to the core of the earth heats up and rises. As this magma gets close to the crust it cools down and falls back down towards the core. This process is repeated over and over again causing the plates to move
500
explain why we have the seasons of summer and winter
the earth is axis in on a tilt. As the earth moves around the sun one hemisphere (section of the earth) is closer to the sun than the other. this hemisphere is experiencing summer. the hemisphere further away from the sun experiences winter.
