True or False: Organisms that are unable to adapt and change with their environment will become extinct.

True. As an organism's environment changes over time, the organism must adapt or it will eventually cease to exist

100

True or False? All bones become fossilized after millions of years.

FALSE! Very few bones actually become fossils. Most disintegrate back into the soil.

100

Energy is...

the ability to do work or cause change... it makes things happen!

100

Which of the following are types of waves?

a) song     b) sound

c) water    d) dance

e) heat     f) optional

sound, water, heat

100

Name three potential types of interference that could occur with information transfer (text message, photo message, phone call, etc.)

Acceptable answers:

-poor signal, phone call wouldn't go through, picture message may not send (file too big)

-photo may not send clear message

-a phone call has to be answered immediately or message will not be transferred

One adaptation a giraffe has to survive is:

a) It's long neck (to reach leaves at the top of trees)

b) It's long, purple tongue (for eating/protection)

c) It's spotted pattern (for camoflauge)

d) all of the above

200

Which of the following are types of fossils?

(Choose ALL that apply)

a) Compression

b) Falsified

c) Mold and cast

d) Permineralization

e) Calcification

f) Petrification

g) True form

200

The heavier an object is...

a) the LESS energy it has to transfer

b) the MORE energy it has to transfer

200

What are the two main types of waves?

Hint: the way they travel

Transverse (up and down like water waves)

Longitudinal (side to side, like slinky, sound waves)

200

True or False:

A star is a burning ball of gas millions of miles away

TRUE! (Pumba was right!)

300

Name one animal and how it functions in its environment

(first appropriate answer wins)

300

How long does it take for a bone to become fossilized through permineralization?

a) Millions of years

b) Thousands of years

c) Hundreds of years

300

True or False?

Increasing the speed of an object increases the amount of energy that object has to transfer.

TRUE!

300

What changes when you adjust the amplitude of a wave?

It changes the wave height, or in the instance of sound, the volume

300

True or False:

Objects that are closer are brighter and/or bigger than objects that are further away.

FALSE! They APPEAR brighter/bigger, but they aren't necessarily actually bigger or brighter.

For instance, our sun is a very average-sized star, yet because it's so much closer than other stars, it APPEARS bigger and brighter.

400

An example of an adaptation is:

a) Brushing your teeth

b) Changing your light bulbs

c) Putting on extra layers of clothing on cold days

400

Which of these is an example of a true-form fossil?

a) A mosquito trapped in amber

b) A mammoth frozen in ice

c) A mummified human

d) All of the above

400

Energy can be transferred in the form of:

a) Heat

b) Sound

c) Shape Change

d) All of these

400

What is the difference between frequency and amplitude?

Frequency adjusts the wavelength (with sound, that's the pitch)

Amplitude adjusts the wave height (with sound, that's the volume)

400

Name 2 stars that are bigger than our sun.

UY Scuti, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Pistol Star, Sirius, Pollux

500

Adaptations are:

a) ways the environment changes over time

b) ways organisms change to survive

c) types of climates where organisms live

500

Tell me how you remember what a COMPRESSION fossil is:

(the story about the guy at Lagoon COMing to PRESS the stamp on your hand... the actual stamp doesn't stay on your hand, and it doesn't make an imprint on your hand... just a stain or print showing evidence something was there. In the case of real compression fossils, it's carbon that comes in and replaces all of the organic material that decomposed)

500

True or false:

Energy always stays in the same form when transferring.

FALSE! Energy changes form all of the time! (It can go from movement to electricity to light, it can go from friction to heat, it can go from movement to sound, etc)

500

Describe the difference between a digitized (digital) signal and non-digitized (analog) signal.

A digitized signal changes instantaneously. It takes an analog signal, converts it into a pattern of 1's and 0's called BINARY CODE. That code can then be transferred to another digital device and decoded into a picture, message, or sound.

Non-digitized signals are continuous signals that do NOT ever become 1's and 0's. (examples: echolocation, analog clock with minute and second hands, a dog barking, etc.)

500

Why are digital signals more reliable than analog signals?

-Analog signals aren't always exact (for example, analog clocks are set manually, not connected to the satellite, so they may not be the exact time)

-Analog signals can be less clear (for example, when you listen to a radio station you could get static interference, whereas if you if you listened to a CD or something streamed from a digital device, you wouldn't run into that problem)
