A page by page listing of the book’s contents. This is used to organize and plan deadlines.
LADDER
A few sentences that identify the who, what, where, when, why and how of a picture.
CAPTION
The horizontal break on the spread, usually one pica, never found in the middle of the layout
Eyeline
The title AND subtitle of the page that lets readers know what the spread is about.
Headline and Subheadline
A photo or an element that commands the reader’s attention on a spread by size or importance
Dominant
A verbal statement and a visual look which tie all parts of the yearbook together.
Theme
A spread used to separate each of the sections of the yearbook.
DIVIDERS
A list of the technical printing information about the yearbook, including price, number of copies, colors, fonts, photographer and awards won by previous years. It appears at the end of the index.
Colophon
Word for the writing that goes into the yearbook (story, captions)
Copy
Real or imaginary lines that direct the reader to the center of interest in a photo.
Leading Lines
Heavier sheets of paper which hold the pages of the yearbook to the cover. It may be designed with the table of contents or left blank.
ENDSHEETS
A ”mini theme” used as section titles.

Name of our Yearbook publishing company

Word for the page number.
Folio
What is the name of our photography company?
CADY
Outside of the yearbook which protects the printed page.
Cover
Listing of the pages and page numbers containing the opening, sections, and index. The contents can appear on the endsheet, title page, or opening.
Contents
A traditional yearbook is typically divided into these (for example, student life, academics, organizations, sports, faculty, underclass, etc.)
Sections
Elements such as color, white space, lines, screens, etc. to enhance a book’s design.
Graphics
Space in the middle of a spread where pictures should not cross, especially faces or important focal points of the photograph.
Area of the yearbook connecting the front and back cover. Like the year, theme statement or logo, school name, city, state, book name, and volume.
Spine
DIVIDER PAGE
A complete alphabetical listing of all the students, teachers, topics, and events covered in the yearbook.
Index
Printing in Magenta, Cyan, Yellow, and Black. These colors combine for full color picture.
Four Color
Photography technique: Division of a photo, horizontally and vertically, so the subject falls into one of the intersecting optical hot spots
