The purpose of the land acknowledgement before the playing of the national anthem
We had not treated our First Nations, those who were native to this land and came here before us, well. Many of them were sent to residential school in attempts to "assimilate" them into the new culture, but they were abused, isolated from their own culture, and only taught menial tasks up to grade five level. We now recognise our wrongdoing, and repent it. The government has issued an apology to the surviving First Nations communities and has started a movement called "Truth and Reconciliation" to try and fix what is broken. One of the ways is the land acknowledgement.
