1. Intraphase: The cell grows, carries out normal functions, and duplicates its DNA (S phase) so it's ready for mitosis; it’s the longest stage and occurs before prophase.
2. Prophase: Chromosomes condense and become visible, while the nuclear envelope begins breaking down and spindle fibers start to form.
3. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell, attached to spindle fibers at their centromeres.
4. Anaphase: Sister chromatids are pulled apart toward opposite ends of the cell.
5. Telaphase: Chromatids reach the poles, new nuclear envelopes form around them, and the cell begins to split.
6. Cytokinesis: The cytoplasm divides, resulting in two identical daughter cells.
