By the ninth century the Christian Church had spread into Celtic Lands and supplanted older pagan rites.

November 2 became known as “All Souls Day”, honouring and praying for the dead. Poor people would visit the houses of wealthier families and receive pastries called “soul cakes” in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the homeowners’ dead relatives.

Known as "souling," the practice was later taken up by children, who would go from door to door asking for gifts such as food, money and ale.

How to be a Mental Health Ally?

1. Ask

If you notice a change in an individual's behaviour, take time to check in with your people.

2. Listen -

If someone is experiencing distress, they may find it hard to communicate, taking time to listen and understand makes space for a range of experiences and doesn't add pressure to the conversation.

3. Validate-

Take time to validate a person's concerns, respect their boundaries and show your support through validating what another person is experiencing.
