Who was Mr. Reinhart, where did he die, and what did he die from?
Mr. Reinhart was a popular illustrator whose death inspired Willa Cather to write "The Sculptor's Funeral". He died in New York and died from Player's disease.
He and Harvey went to the same school and they were forced to go into a career path chosen by the "Misty Group". Laird became a lawyer as wanted, but Harvey went on his own path and became a sculptor.

The oyster represents the outside interpretation of Harvey Merrick and the community's beliefs about him. While the pearl represents who he truly is, his inner soul.

What is your interpretation of conformity/oppression vs. freedom from the passage?
Freedom was disliked and Harvey Merrick represented freedom by escaping and leaving his hometown that was filled with social conformity. His hometown lacked understanding towards art and they were only centered on profiting through industry. (greedy people)

Uses compare and contrast to describe him alongside Jim Laird and the other men who were affected by the Misty Group.
Uses irony to display the unfortunate environment Harvey Merrick had to live in before he escaped his hometown to pursue his dreams.

Mr. Merrick was different from the perceptions of what other people thought about him. He was a light to everything he touched, as if he was like purifying things to their deepest soul.
Mr. Merrick is a sculptor who may have learned human anatomy and art, so he basically gives color and light to everything that is dull/once dull.

A period where industrialism flourished, insane economic growth, and massive inequality.
