conflicts arise when a family member try to solve another's problem. Taking steps to do this with your problems help prevent conflict and strengthen family interactions

Physical abuse, shaken baby syndrome, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, trafficking, and neglect
What are different forms of child abuse?
living as a victim or as a person who has ever been wronged, harmed, or hurt by others
What is victimhood?
Satisfying physical needs, promoting emotional support, speaking and being heard, supporting and encouraging
What are the four areas on rights and responsibilities?
established patterns of behavior or customs handed down through generations that often build a sense of family identity
What are family traditions?
Using these communication skills shows empathy and encourages family members to solve their own problems
What is active listening and I-statements?
repeated and unexplained bruises, welts, burns, fractures, joint injuries, cuts, or scrapes. Hostile or overly compliant
What are signs of physical abuse?
brain damage caused by fast and forceful shaking, blows to the head, or dropping or throwing a child
What is shaken baby syndrome?
children get older or there is a change within or outside the family that affects a family member's ability to fulfill responsibilities
What are reasons family roles and responsibilities change?
small events or activities that are repeated on a regular basis to strengthen families and provide opportunities for sharing and showing affection
What are family routines?
When one person tries to rescue and enable others to continue with problematic behaviors instead of letting others take responsibility for their own choices
What is a codependent relationship?
begging or stealing food, constant fatigue, failing to attend school, showing up to school early/leaving late
What are signs of neglect?
individuals required by law to report cild abuse to the authorities if they know or suspect it is happening
What are mandated reporters?
support a family member who is unable to fulfill responsibilites and work together to take on responsibilities that a family member can't fulfill
What are the two ways to restore balance in a family?
when communication lines are open, privacy is respected, and genuine concern and respect are showed for family members
What is trust?
taking ownership of your problems and letting family members know that solving the problem is something you need to do by expressing I-statements
What is reviewing personal boundaries?
bedwetting, torn or stained underclothing, difficulty walking/sitting, frequent urinary tract infections, sore throats, social withdrawal, lack of emotional control, low self-esteem
What are signs of sexual abuse?
Crisis-care centers, shelters, group homes, foster care, independent living
What are care options for abused children?
All family members interact with one another and every member has an effect on every other family member
What is a family system?
Family members work together to jointly select the best choice and help carry out the plan of action
What is democratic decision making?
when family members will not take ownership of a problem that is theirs and instead blames others
What is scapegoating?
Good communication, decision-making, conflict resolution skills, and seeking professional
