place the electrode pad at least 1" away. some people have a small device implanted in their torso that delivers automatic shocks to the heart. attach the AED pads in the same manner as for pacemakers, making sure they are 1" away. if you see minor contractions in the area while you are reading the AED, wait 20-30 seconds until the automated internal cardiac defibrillator is finished. you can touch the victim when the AICD is shocking

the survival of a victim of circulatory disease depends upon a series of interventions in the Canadian chain of survival. when a first-aider first recognizes cardiac arrest and preforms CPR the first link of the chain is activated. access to early defibrillation is the next link. the sooner defibrillation occurs the better a victims chance of survival.
