Ancient Athens is credited with creating democracy, a type of government which can still be seen in several countries, including the United States. Describe two ways in which Athenian democracy is similar to American democracy in the U.S and two ways in which the two democracies are different.
Similar: They both allowed for citizen involvement in the government, laws to be created, and gave citizens the right to vote.
Differences:
Athenian Democracy: Only adult males born in Athens had the right to vote
Laws were proposed by the council and approved by a majority in the assembly
Citizens with voting rights can vote for or against any law
American Democracy: All citizens, male and female age 18 or over have the right to vote
Laws were approved by Senate and House of Representatives and signed by the president
Citizens with voting rights can vote for or against the officials who make the laws
