Explain why the 1st French Revolution was considered a failure.
Did not enact enlightenment-inspired government. Following execution of King Louis 16th, the "republic" that was formed was a "reign of terror" - mass executions and ineffective gov't. France returned to monarchy and did not have a successful republic until the 2nd revolution in 1848.
Describe race-based policies in British colonies: South Africa & Australia.
South Africa: Apartheid - segregation
Australia: White Australia - did not permit immigration for non-Europeans (particularly restricted Asian immigration)
Describe the event that catalyzed Japan's rise as the industrialized, imperial power it would be in the Era of Global Conflict.
Meiji Restoration c. 1860 - Civil War (Boshin War) led to a shift in power back to the Emperor, Meiji. Japan underwent state-sponsored industrialization and began to expand throughout Asia. By the time Hirohito became Emperor, Japan had a large empire and was extremely hypernationalistic.
Spread and blending of religions
Evaluate Maritime Empires' cultural practices concerning colonized territories and the native people.
Cultural impression - forced conversion to Christianity, loss of native culture
In the case of the Aztec and Inca Empires, complete overhaul of customs and language - everything was made to imitate Spanish way of life
Explain the relation between the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Haitian Revolution.
Success of the American revolution inspired the French Revolution. French revolution inspired Haitian revolution, but independence/abolition movement was led by slaves. Due to success of Haitian revolution, Napoleon/France gave up on American presence and sold the Louisiana territory to the US.
Briefly recap the history of governance in India c. 1450 - 1947. (Include the change that happened in 1947)
Governed by the Mughal empire until BEIC began to gain political power in the 1800s. BEIC charter was revoked in 1857 (Sepoy Rebellion), India then became a royal colony. Britain granted Indian independence in 1947 (created Pakistan as a nation for the Muslim population)

WWI: Neutral until Zimmerman Telegram, American "doughboys" were instrumental in closing out fighting on the Western front, American aid helped the allies turn the final tide in war
WWII: Neutral until Pearl Harbor, Island Hopping in the Pacific, Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki
Compare: What did empires in Africa and the Americas depend on for revenue for state maintenance?
Africa: salt, gold, slave trade
Americas: tribute
