Types of Governments
Is a group of people who make decisions for a town, city, village, or region.
What is a local government?
Local rules created by the local governments to keep the community run smoothly and keep people safe.
What are bylaws?
Protect the lives and property of people in the community. These include ambulance, police and fire protection.
What are safety and protection services?
Allow candidates to communicate their ideas to the public.
What is an election?
Means to manage, rule or influence.

Has jurisdiction over provinces or territories
What is a Provincial and Territorial Government?
A spending plan created by the municipal government

Are open to the public, so anyone can go to them, listen and speak (with permission).

Help people to meet their basic needs. Can include child care, nutrition programs, and programs to help people find jobs.

Is a meeting that allows citizens to give their opinions about an issue affecting their community.

Is the power to make decisions and laws.

Who are councillors?
Include museums, art galleries and outdoor festivals. These expose us to new ideas and different perspectives of the community and the world.

Is a process by which community members vote on whether the government should take a certain action.
What is a referendum?
The person who leads a municipal council.

What are Band Councils?
1. A councillor is notified that some members of a neighbourhood would like a park built. The councillor informs the council.
2. The council discusses the idea. A committee is created to explore the project.
3. The committee sees if there is a suitable area in the neighbourhood for a park. If they can fund the park. Discuss the impact of building one with experts such as engineers and environmentalists.
4. The committee notifies the community. A meeting is held to share more information with the community and ask for input about the park.
5. Based on available funds, support from experts, and input from the public, councillors vote to build the park.

What are health services?
Governments use newspaper articles, TV or radio ads, websites, flyers, or social media to communicate to the community.
What is media and/or technology communication?
A group of people selected by council to investigate an issue and make recommendations to the council.
