NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization- April 4, 1949. Twelve nations assembled in Washington to sign the NATO treaty, which established s European defense pact that initially included the U.S., Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Portugal, and the Netherlands. By the 1950’s membership grew to 15 with the addition of Greece, Turkey and West Germany. The NATO was a military alliance of permanent duration, uniting signatories “by continual self-help and mutual aid.” An attack on one or more was considered an attack on all.
